Spring 2010: Baby Animals in the Lower Mainland

Spring has brought a whole group of new additions to local Parks and waterways and here is a list of some places to see new Canadian Geese Goslings, Eagle chicks, baby Herons, ducklings as well as a list of some of the animals we'll be seeing soon! Have a great time enjoying some of these cute and fluffy critters (remember to keep your distance!) and let us know via our contact link if you spot anything else we can add to the list. The Canadian Geese Goslings are new additions to the Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park.SpringSwan turning her eggs over in her nest at Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon. has finally sprung in the Lower Mainland with dozens of new baby animal sightings! Here is a list of what you can see:

  • CANADIAN GEESE GOSLINGS in Stanley Park, Burnaby Lake and the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary (There are two pairs of Canadian Geese in Stanley Park at the Lost Lagoon with three and two goslings respectively, two couples as well at Burnaby Lake with fifteen and twelve chicks spotted near the The Gosling chicks at Burnaby Lake number up to 15
siblings! These guys are much older than their Stanley Park
counterparts.Burnaby Lake Nature House and several pairs with recently hatched goslings at the Reifel Sanctuary in Delta.
  • BABY HERONS in the Stanley Park Heronry (it was a tough Spring with lots of storms but the baby Herons have arrived! They are tough to spot them unless at the right angle as they are in their nests so bring binoculars and your ears as they are easy to hear - they make a nuk-nuk sound)
  • WOOD DUCK CHICKS in the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary (large groups of chicks hatched in the last week of April and can be Ducklings will be hatching soon throughout the Lower Mainland.spotted along the trails) [cute photo from mnlamberson's Flickr photostream]
  • EAGLE CHICK in Stanley Park (The Stanley Park Ecology Society has reported the nesting pair along the Merilees Trail (near Prospect Point) had a chick hatch on April 21st: link)
  • DUCKLINGS in Baby Raccoon exploring Stanley Park's Lost Lagoon Region.Stanley Park (Mallard ducklings are usually spotted in both Beaver Lake and the Lost Lagoon these cuties should hatch any week now, with any luck there might also be Wood Duck chicks and Wigeons as well! **UPDATE: first ducklings of the year were spotted in the Lost Lagoon on May 5th, 2010**
  • CYGNETS in Stanley Park (there are three swan nests at the Lost Lagoon - they should be hatching in the next few weeks) **UPDATE: One Cygnet has hatched in the Lost Lagoon: link (Blog: Three Days Old)**

Also, keep an eye out for:

  • BABY RACCOONS in Stanley Park (the young Raccoons and Mom usually emerge from the brush mid-may)
  • OSPREY CHICKS at the Maplewood Conservation Area (Osprey pairs have begun to rebuild their nests on the pilings along Indian Arm - bring good binoculars to see them!
