Winter Birdwatching in Delta, British Columbia

Winter brings snow to the Lower Mainland's surrounding mountains as well as many temporary avian residents who spend their winters in the region. Delta (North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen) has gained notoriety as being one of the most species rich region in Canada for birds during the winter months with over a hundred and forty species recorded each year. Most notably, the area attracts hundreds of majestic birds of prey such as Owls, Hawks and Eagles and in turn, is a magnet for veteran and begginner birders. Try winter birding, a great activity for everyone!

Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Delta, British Columbia.Delta, British Columbia is a haven for birdwatchers in the winter months with over a hundred species to be spotted. There are many spectacular locales in the region which offer fantastic bird watching opportunities:

  • GEORGE C. REIFEL MIGRATORY BIRD SANCTUARY | 9:00am - 5:00pm | $3 - $5 (seeds: $1) | Follow Westham Island Road from the bridge until you reach the Sanctuary (map) | The George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary is British Columbia's premier birding locale. Many birds can be spotted here year round with wintering species including Eagles, Owls, Hawks and Black-Crowned Night Herons. | Website
  • BOUNDARY BAY REGIONAL PARK | Dawn - Dusk | From 12th Avenue, follow the road as it turns into Boundary Bay Road and look for the signs indicating the Park turnoff (map) | The shallow bay adjacent to Boundary Bay Regional Park attracts hundreds of shorebirds at low tide. Winter also brings many birds of prey such as Snowy Owls, Barn Owls, Northern Harriers and Bald Eagles. | Website
  • BOUNDARY BAY TO MUD BAY DIKE TRAIL | Dawn - Dusk | 16.4km Trail from Delta to Surrey (map) | This trail is ideal for spotting a wide range of birds of prey that winter in the area. It is not uncommon to see a dozen Bald Eagles in a single tree!
  • TSAWWASSEN FERRY TERMINAL | Dawn - Dusk | Take Highway 17 through Delta to the Ferry Terminal (map) | The long jetty that makes up the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal is a haven for shorebirds. Limited parking before the toll booths allows visitors to park and walk along the rocks which offer many unique birding opportunities.

Delta offers birdwatchers over a hundred different species to spot such as this rare Northern Hawk Owl.Dozens of Bald Eagles make British Columbia their winter home can can be spotted often high above in the sky and in the trees.

The George C. Riefel Migratory Bird Sanctuary is home to the only wintering group of Black-Crowned Night Herons in Canada.

Common species such as the Black-Eyed Junco can be seen often in Delta, British Columbia.Several Sandhill Cranes winter in the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary.
