2010 Fall Bird Migration in British Columbia

Looking for the perfect fall activity? Grab your binoculars, camera and bird books and head over to the Lower Mainland's shoreline parks such as Blackie Spit Park, Iona Beach Regional Park, Stanley Park and the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary as they host thousands of migrating birds along the Pacific Flyaway! Catch large groups of Snow Geese, Long-Billed Dowitchers and even Sandhill Cranes as they make their way to their wintering grounds. Don't miss the Fall Migration coming through coastal British Columbia in the month of October!

The coastline of several cities which make up the Lower Mainland (South Surrey, Delta, Richmond and Vancouver) is the stopping point for thousands of birds during the fall migration. Visitors to locales such as Blackie Spit Park, Iona Beach Regional Park and even Stanley Park can see mass migrations of dozens of species of birds as they make their annual journeys.

The best migration viewing locale in the Lower Mainland is the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary which offers several kilometres of trail through marshes, forest, scrubland and farmland. Here, visitors can spot dozens of bird species - especially during the fall migration. As of October 17, 2010, large groups of Snow Geese, Sandhill Cranes and Long-Billed Dowitchers have been spotted at the Sanctuary. Don't miss them!

Several hundred Long-Billed Dowitchers are currently resting in the large ponds in the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary.

The migrations and rumours of rare bird sightings have brought birdwatchers out in force!
