Picking the Perfect Pumpkin at Laity Farms

Halloween is by far my most favourite holiday of the year! Every year I managed to squirrel about ten pumpkins into our apartment. October means we get to explore another one of the region’s fabulous pumpkin farms!

2008 Pumpkin Carving ContestLast year we got all of our pumpkins in Richmond Country Farm's The Pumpkin Patch. I think it was a little less adult friendly then Laity Farms but still pretty good. We were a little taken aback by the fact we were the only adults without children and the sing-a-long hay ride was fun but embarrassing! We did however get some amazing pumpkins and carved some equally amazing designs for our annual Halloween pumpkin contest! You can help us pick this year's winner when we post the photos next week! Here are last year's pumpkins - Pumpkin A (aka 'MY' Pumpkin won last year!)

So, this year we decided to look for a different pumpkin farm and check out what the Greater Vancouver Region has to offer - Pitt Meadows was our choice and we found a farm that fit the bill: Laity Farms! Finding the farm was really easy - I can spot bright orange pumpkins from a mile away! There was plenty of parking and when we arrived I was excited to see that there were wheelbarrows to carry your pumpkins around (which was really great for my better half as he's the strongest of the two of us and usually ends up carrying everything! We... aka me... couldn't wait to pick out a pumpkin so we went to the pumpkin patch first! We did however get side tracked by the animal farm...

Laity Pumpkin Patch in Pitt MeadowsThe pumpkin patch was gigantic! We always go straight to the back to see if we can find big pumpkins - on the way I found lots of little ones which I piled into the wheelbarrow. We finally reached the far edge and started our search - my better half found his very quickly, but as usual I was flip flopping between a few. I picked a nice tall pumpkin and him a short fat one - they were more medium sized then large which was a little disappointing, but all the small pumpkins we found lessened the pain! Overall we got two medium pumpkins, a white gourd and five small pumpkins for $24. Not bad!

Our chosen pumpkins in our wheelbarrow!Once we finished scouring the fields we took our pumpkin-laden wheelbarrow (did I mention how great those were?) and went to the different attractions throughout the farm. The maze was small but very child-friendly and the forest was quite fun using Disney, Fairytale and Dinosaur themes throughout it. We didn't try the gold panning but instead made a beeline for the big red barn. We had a small snack and drinks and went to the next room in the barn which was filled with animals! I loved the turkeys and baby chickens the best, but there were lots of animals such as sheep, goats, budgies and ducks as well!

I'm very happy we tried a new farm! We had a great day and we now have two pumpkins waiting to be carved! I hope you all vote for your favourite when we post the final products in a week!
