National Flag of Canada Day

Forty-six years ago, on February 15, 1965, a new symbol of Canada was hoisted high above Parliament Hill in the country's capital, Ottawa. This waving flag replaced its predecessors, the Union Jack and the Canadian Red Ensign, becoming a symbol of the country and its unique people as well as one of the most recognizable flags in the world. Celebrate Canada's unique and beautiful flag throughout the country on February 15: National Flag of Canada Day!

February 15, 2011 is National Flag of Canada Day - celebrate the most recognizable flag in the world!In 1965, one of the most recognizable symbols of Canada was hoisted high above Ottawa's Parliament Hill for the first time on February 15.

For decades, Canada flew the Union Jack until Canada's first Prime Minster, Sir John A. MacDonald appointed the Canadian Red Ensign the new flag. In 1964, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson made the creation of a new flag a priority and the distinctive maple leaf flanked by two red stripes was adopted as the country's national flag (red and white were designated as Canada's official colours by King George V in 1921).

Today, the flag is a symbol of Canada which can be found at the top of the world, Mount Everest and even in outer space! One year ago during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver it ignited a passion which continues to burn brightly in the hearts of Canadians across the country.
