Perseids Meteor Shower 2010

Named for the constellation Perseus, which is located in roughly the same point of the night sky where this nighttime event appears to originate from, the Perseid meteor shower is one of the most regular in timing which can potentially be visible for weeks in the late summer sky, depending on weather and location. Peaking in mid-August every year, British Columbians can take to their favourite stargazing locales where there is little light pollution and open skies to see this spectacular meteor shower from July 23 to August 22, 2010!

Experience the Perseids Meteor Shower this week in the night sky across British Columbia.The Perseids Meteor Shower offers some of the best stargazing and meteor spotting of the year.Experience the Perseids Meteor Shower - one of the best meteor showers to observe, with up to 50 meteors per hour at its peak. In 2010 it peaks on the night of August 12th and the morning of the 13th but some meteors should be visible between July 23 - August 22. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Perseus. Here are some great spots to stargaze as well as some stargazing events in the Lower Mainland:

  • METEOR SHOWER WATCH - ALL NIGHT STARGAZING | August 11 | This is an all night event | Aldergrove Lake Regional Park (map) | $2/person | The Perseids Meteor Shower is a spectacular annual event. Come to the Park with a tent, flashlights, warm clothes and a snack to enjoy this spectacular nighttime show. Also take a guided constellation walk, and The Perseid Meteor Shower happens July 23 - August 22, 2010.hear tales of the mythic Greek hero Perseus.

  • STARGAZING SATURDAYS | Every Saturday | Gordon MacMillan Southam Observatory, Vancouver (map) | Visit the Gordon MacMillan Southam Observatory every Saturday to stargaze from its telescope.

  • IONA BEACH REGIONAL PARK | Iona Beach Regional Park, Richmond (map) | Gates close at 10:00pm | Considered one of the best locations in the Lower Mainland to stargaze, Iona Beach Regional Park in Richmond, British Columbia is the perfect place to watch the Perseid.

  • CYPRESS MOUNTAIN LOOKOUT | Cypress Provincial Park lookout (map) | Look at the night sky from one of the regions highest points!

  • BURNABY MOUNTAIN CONSERVATION AREA | Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area (map) | View from Burnaby's highest point!
