Rockhounding in British Columbia

This weekend the BC Gem Show is on in Abbotsford where you can see a wide range of beautiful rocks, minerals and gemstones found across the province, or you can try rockhounding on your own in British Columbia in various locations from mountain tops to beach shores. Finding rocks - depending on what you're looking for - can be very easy or very hard. Whether in the Lower Mainland, the Interior or on Vancouver Island, the opportunities are endless!

Beaches are one of the most popular rockhounding locations as many interesting rocks can be found.I think we can all remember when rocks ranging in size, color and brilliance were the most amazing thing in the world when we were kids - even as grown ups we still enjoy the multitude of gems, minerals and interesting rocks there are to be found in British Columbia! Rockhounding has become a popular pastime throughout the province with enthusiasts looking for these treasures along trails, beaches and even caves! Join some rock lovers this weekend at the BC Gem Show or explore some of these great locales:

BC GEM SHOW
Date: April 9th - 11th, 2010
Time: 9th: 10:00am - 8:00pm | 10th/11th: 10:00am - 6:00pm
Admission: Adult: $6 / Child: $2 / 6 and Under: FREE
Location: The BC Gem Show is located in the Ag-Rec Building on the Central Fraser Valley Fairgrounds (32470 Haida Drive) in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

ROCKHOUNDING: LOWER MAINLAND
Information: The varied geology of the Lower Mainland offers many different rocks. From the low beaches to the mountain tops rock hunters can find a wide range of interesting finds. The Geological Survey of Canada shop in Downtown Vancouver offers maps, books and a collection of rocks for purchase (located at 101-605 Robson Street), the BC Geological Survey's online maps which allows users to research minerals and rocks located in specific areas, and groups such as the British Columbia Lapidary Society provide a range of information and activities for rockhounding in the province. Also check Rock hounding can occur across the landscape from Ocean to Desert.out the Pacific Museum of the Earth at the UBC Campus to see some amazing local rock collections along with gemstones, fossils, and even a Lambeosaurus skeleton!

ROCKHOUNDING: KAMLOOPS:
Information: Once covered by water, Kamloops is a premier rockhounding location with fossils and minerals such as gold, opals, agates, zeolites, geodes and many other precious gemstones and strewn throughout the region. The McAbee Fossil Beds (once a shallow lake 50 million years ago), Savona Caves and Painted Bluffs Provincial Park are places to check out. Guided local tours are available and are recommended for novices.

ROCKHOUNDING: VANCOUVER ISLAND:
Locations: Englishman River Falls near Victoria, Petroglyph Park and the Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park near Nanaimo and the Gulf Islands of Saltspring, Saturna and Hornby Islands as well as near old mines on Vancouver Island.
Information: Vancouver Island offers some of the best rockhounding in British Columbia due to its abundance of beaches and unique geological locales with fossils and spectacular caves. The beaches are some of the best locations to find rocks - especially as vicious winter storms toss interesting rocks onto the shores throughout the year which are easy to find. Varieties of rocks such as porphyries, dallasite and rhodonite can be found on the Island, as well, there are shops that can be visited to find supplies and resources to help you find interesting rocks such as maps, books and tools.
