Salmon Fry Releases in Greater Vancouver May 2011

This weekend, May 7 - 8, 2011, celebrate Salmon and help release thousands of them into creeks and rivers across the Lower Mainland! Salmon are a very important part of British Columbia's history and with the alteration of many of the rivers throughout the province, many Salmon could not return to their spawning grounds. Today, hatcheries and other initiatives make it possible for Salmon populations to continue to thrive. Come learn about the Salmon at a local hatchery and help release fry into the wild at one of this weekend's Salmon release festivals!

• FINGERLING FESTIVAL | May 7, 2011 | 11:00am - 3:00pm | Noons Creek Hatchery: 300 Ioco Road, Port Moody (map) | Free | Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Fingerling Festival with entertainment, the release of 40,000 Chum Salmon, displays, activities and much more! | Website
• SALMON SEND OFF | May 8, 2011 | 11:00am - 3:00pm | Tynehead Regional Park: 96th Avenue between 160th and 168th Streets, Surrey (map) | Free | Release salmon fry into the Serpentine River, go on a hatchery tour, take a walk and enjoy activities for the kids! | Website

HATCHERIES IN THE LOWER MAINLAND:
• STANLEY PARK HATCHERY | Open Year Round | From the Stanley Park Seawall at 0.5 km, follow the trail toward the Aquarium, Vancouver (map) | North Vancouver's Capilano Fish Hatchery in Capilano Regional Park.Learn about fish, the perils they face and see the hatchery.
• CAPILANO RIVER HATCHERY | May: 8:00am - 7:00pm | Capilano River Hatchery: 4500 Capilano Park Road, North Vancouver (map) | Learn about Salmon, see them jump up the fish ladder and see fry in the rearing tanks and in various stages of growth! | Website
• SEYMOUR HATCHERY | Rice Lake Road north the end, North Vancouver (map) | Visit the rearing shed and ponds to see Coho, Chinook and Steelhead fry and learn about these fantastic fish! | Website
• BELL IRVING FISH HATCHERY | Sat-Sun: 1:00pm - 3:00pm | Bell Irving Fish Hatchery: 11450 256 Street, Maple Ridge (map) | Take a tour of the Hatchery, see the rearing ponds and learn about Salmon! | Website
• TERMINAL CREEK HATCHERY | The Hatchery is located along Mt. Gardner Road, north of Snug Cove, Bowen Island (map) | If you see a volunteer, ask for a tour to see egg trays, Salmon fry and walk around Crippen Regional Park to see fish ladders, ponds and more! | Website
