The Munin Viking Longship in Vancouver

Ever wonder what that Viking Ship is doing in English Bay off the coast of Vancouver? The Munin is a replica of a Viking Longship and was built and launched in 2001 as a part of the British Columbia Viking Ship Project. Often seen on the waters off the city, the Munin is an amazing sight amongst the modern sailboats and cargo ships and can also be seen docked at the Vancouver Maritime Museum or on display at events and festivals throughout the region.

The Viking Longship the Munin is a replica built to celebrate the Scandinavian heritage of the people of British Columbia,The intricate carvings have been replicated to create an authentic Viking Ship.7% of British Columbians are of Scandinavian (Nordic) decent (the West Coast has many Scandinavian regions like the one in Ballard, WA, USA) which honor their roots through festivals, events and this replica of a Viking ship which was built to celebrate a millennium since Eric Lief and his crew landed on the shores of eastern Canada.

In 2000 the BC Viking Ship Project began work on a scale replica of the Viking Longship Gokstad which was headed by three master boat buildings from Norway. On July 17, 2001 it was launched at Vanier Park in Vancouver and named the Munin (for the Raven that is perched on Odin's shoulder in Norse mythology) and took its maiden voyage to the Vancouver Maritime Museum docks where it continues to be admired by visitors and where it set sails from. Today, the Munin is a functioning vessel which can often be seen in English Bay. This 40 foot boat can accommodate 12 people and the 2 hour rides are by donation (please give generously to help cover maintenance and insurance costs so they don't have to pillage the kayakers and cargo ships along the way). As a passenger you will be rowing (when there isn't wind to propel the boat) so be sure to bring gloves to protect your hands as well as a windproof jacket, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and a snack and drink. Cameras and binoculars are also suggested. Life jackets are provided.

Rides are available only on weekends in the mornings or afternoons:

  • Departure Point: Heritage Harbour dock in Vanier Park, Vancouver (map)
  • Cost: By donation (please give generously)
  • How to Book: Email to reserve
