Whitehorse, Yukon Territory

Whitehorse, the Capital of the Yukon Territory is known as the Wilderness City - unsurprising as many hiking and multi-use trails are located within and in the surrounding region, animals and birds are frequent visitors and the long summer hours mean outdoor enthusiasts can indulge in many activities past the evening. Whitehorse is the Yukon's major city centre with several museums (including the Old Log Church Museum, the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre, and the MacBride Museum of Yukon History), attractions (Tram, Fish Ladder and Hatchery, Miles Canyon, and Yukon Wildlife Preserve) as well as many outdoor activities to explore and enjoy in Canada's North!

WHITEHORSE ACTIVITIES
• WHITEHORSE TRAM | This distinctive yellow tram makes its way from the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site and runs along the waterfront of the Yukon River.
• OLD LOG CHURCH MUSEUM | Operating out of Whitehorse's historic of Church, the museum details the history of missionaries and church life. The most interesting exhibit is the remains of Bishop Stringer's boots - the man who ate his own boots while lost in the wilderness to stave off starvation.
• S.S. KLONDIKE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE | The largest of the paddle wheelers which once operated between Whitehorse and Dawson City. The boat was grounded, restored, and opened as a Parks Canada National Historic Site.
• FISH HATCHERY AND WOODEN FISH LADDER | Home to the longest wooden fish ladder in the world, this informative hatchery details the long journey of Salmon making their way from the Bering Sea and up the Yukon River to its headwaters.
• MILES CANYON | Once the most dangerous stretch of the Yukon River, this narrow, rushing canyon claimed several lives until a tramway was built to bypass it. The hydro-electric dam submerged Miles Canyon and the Whitehorse rapids in 1958.
• YUKON WILDLIFE PRESERVE | Home to over a hundred animals representing ten of Yukon's northerly species: Wood Bison, Muskoxen, Moose, Elk, Woodland Caribou, Mule Deer, Thinhorn Sheep, Mountain Goats, Canadian Lynx and Arctic Fox.
