The settlement of Chinese in Barkerville is the oldest in Canada with the Chinese residents of the town making up half of the population of the region.

Visitors to Barkerville Historic Town can visit its large Chinatown - the first settlement of Chinese in Canada. Harsh conditions awaited new immigrants to the region as they were paid half the wages and were corralled into one area of the town which still offers some comforts which were sold in shops like the Wa Lee Store.
