The mudflats of Iona Beach Regional Park are shallow due to the deposits of silt from the adjoining northern arm of the Fraser River.

Attracting dozens of bird species such as sandpipers and herons, the beaches and mudflats of Iona Beach Regional Park offer a bounty of food for a variety of creatures. Low tide sees the ocean recede from the shores of the Park giving visitors an interesting view of the shallow shores.
