Built to protect the interests of the Hudson Bay Company, the Nanaimo Bastion is the oldest building in Nanaimo and the oldest freestanding Hudson Bay Company fort in North America.

Visit the historic Nanaimo Bastion to see the oldest freestanding Hudson Bay Company fort in North America and watch as the cannon is fired daily at noon from the fortification which protected the fledgling harbour city when it was built in 1853.
