The geography of the Coquihalla proved impossible to circumvent, so, Andrew McCulloch, the Chief Engineer, chose to instead carve these tunnels by hand into the granite of the canyon.

As Chief Engineer Andrew McCulloch drew closer to the end of the line for the Canadian Pacific Railway, he faced many hurdles - most of which were caused by British Columbia's terrain. One such are was the Coquihalla Canyon which proved to be an immense task. As it was unsafe to blast the rock, these five tunnels were laboriously carved into the rock
