British Columbia offers dozens of unique ecosystems spread across the province from coastal to to alpine environments and many in between, however, its most fragile and endangered is its desert located near the southern town of Osoyoos. This small desert is the only one in Canada and is home to a wide range of flora and fauna including Prickly Pear Cactus, Sagebrush, Antelope Brush and Burrowing Owls and Pacific Western Rattlesnakes.

Visitors can learn about this rare environment first hand at one of the two Desert Centres open to the public, the Nk'mip Desert Cultural Centre and the Osoyoos Desert Centre. Located north-west Osoyoos, the 67 acre Osoyoos Desert Centre is operated by the Osoyoos Desert Society which is a nonprofit society founded in 1991. From Spring to Fall this small stretch of Desert in the Okanagan region offers an interpretive centre with hands-on exhibits, a demonstration native garden and a 1.5 kilometre elevated boardwalk. Visitors can choose to take a guided or self-guided tour along the boardwalk which has highlights such as old badger holes.

The interpretive centre is an interesting educational experience for all ages using stuffed animals to show the variety of fauna found in the surrounding desert, examples of nests, skulls, plants and other items found in the region to show its biodiversity. Hands on activities also offer a unique learning experience to help appreciate Canada's desert.

Osoyoos' desert is a rare ecosystem and is threatened by increased urbanization and fragmentation. Take the opportunity to visit the Osoyoos Desert Centre to see what makes up this spectacular Canadian locale.
