Take in the history and culture of British Columbia at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria. This three story Museum offers three floors with three galleries: the First Peoples Gallery, the Modern History Gallery and the Natural History Gallery. As well, the Royal BC Museum also offers a large IMAX theatre and a collection of historic buildings and totem poles outdoors. Founded in 1886, the Royal British Columbia Museum (the title 'Royal' was given to the museum by Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Victoria in 1986) has encompasses the province's largest and most comprehensive collections spanning the heritage, history and culture of the region. In 2003, the Archives (founded in 1894) and the Royal BC Museum integrated to become one institution which focuses on collecting local artifacts, documents and specimens.

Encompassing three stories, the Museum has several permanent galleries, the First Peoples Gallery, the Modern History Gallery and the Natural History Gallery (museum guide):

  • The First People's Gallery located on the third floor offers a glimpse into the culture of British Columbia's First Nations with art, cedar baskets, traditional masks and a visual and oral history of the people. Highlights include the Haida Agrilite Carvings, the carved Cedar Canoe and the Gallery of Totem Poles.
  • Also located on the third floor is the Modern History Gallery which takes visitors through the history of the arrival of settlers to the region. Highlights include a replica of the stern of the ship sailed by Captain George Vancouver, Old Town, a turn-of-the-century street complete with a hotel, movie theatre, shop fronts and a Chinatown as well as exhibits featuring gold mining, logging and fishing
  • On the second floor, the Natural History Gallery winds through the ice age to the coastal forests to the edges of the pacific ocean, featuring animals throughout British Columbia such as bears, deer, moose, puffins and sea lions.

Visitors can also explore the Feature Exhibition Gallery on the second floor which houses temporary exhibits throughout the year from world renowned collections to the Museum's own collections. As well, the Royal BC Museum is home to a large collection of outdoor exhibits including Helmcken House (the oldest building in British Columbia).
